Mike Kaye (IJN; Bid 4.5) vs. Nick Markevich (USN)

The I-Boat Raid and CPO Withdrawal adjustments are in play.

Turn 6

Turn 4

USN Report: We recently completed turn 4. I am now waiting for Mike to do his patrols for turn 5.

At the end of turn 4 Mike was ahead by 18 POC (before the bid). He took Pearl Harbor on turn 3, but I controlled the Marshalls on turn 4. I also still control Attu and Dutch Harbor, though Mike has captured Midway and Guadalcanal.

On turn 5 I will have 4 American carriers, 10 LBA, and 3 Marines. Mike has 6 Japanese carriers, 6 LBA, and 2 SNLF. The remaining surface fleets are about even (IJN 11xBB, 13xCA; USN 8xBB, 14xCA; RN 3xBB, 5xCA).

Turn 5

USN Report: On turn 5 I was able to turn back the 2 SNLF trying to invade Dutch Harbor and Attu, break IJN control of the Japanese Islands, Central Pacific, and South Pacific, capture Guadalcanal and Lae, shoot down 2 of the Japanese LBA, and sink 1xCVL, 1xBB, and 2xCA while losing 1xBB and 1xCA.

Mike gained 1 POC on turn 5 to increase his lead to 19 POC.

IJN Comment: apparently I was using 5-sided dice without the 6-pip side, which has been the case through most of the game. Nick was also using 5-sided dice, but lacking the 1-pip side

Turn 6

USN Report: Mike Kaye and I are getting close to the end of combat on turn 6 of our VitP T10 match. See last exchange of emails below and attached file showing situation after round 1 combat. The likely outcome is that the IJN will control JI, CP, and HI for 6 POC, while the USN will control BB, IO, CS, USM, NP, AI, MS, SP, and IN for 10 POC. The only variable is that there is still a tiny chance that the IJN might control the Marianas as well. The net result will probably be a IJN lead of only 15 POC at the end of turn 6 with fleet sizes, base control, and raiding lanes favoring the USN.

USN Report: Mike and I have finished combat for turn 6 (with the exception of 3 shots by the pursued and eliminated Japanese ships). I was able to destroy the SNLF in the Philippines by air raids and will gain control of that base this turn. The POC will be at 15 at the end of the turn.

IJN Comments: Any adjudication would give the game to Nick/Allies; however, if you think there is a shred of possibility they would side with the IJN, then indeed, send it to the adjudicators.

To pull the game out, I would need superb rolls and Nick would need to roll terrible -- sort of the reverse of what happened throughout the game (he had lost only 2 CV through turn 5, even though I had plenty of shots)--unfortunately, we have run out of time so I don't have the chance. I had the game won until this weekend, when I was able to resume play. If I had let time run out prior to playing turn 5, I would have won on time: by my count, 36 elapsed days to 63 elapsed days of play time for me and Nick respectively. However, hated to do that, so re-engaged.

Congratulations, Nick: you played and shot well. Hope I can give you a better game next time.

USN Report: Thanks for an interesting game and especially for your sportsmanship in playing as far as we were able to get this week.

I am sorry about the long delay from mid-July to mid-August, but part of that period included the 10-day cruise I took with my wife to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

I sent John a report of the situation at the end of turn 6 in our game.  My good luck on turns 5 and 6 really helped the Allied position.

I look forward to our rematch in the next top 10 tournament.

In summary, the score will be +15 IJN at the end of turn 6. Mike bid 4.5 to play the Japanese.

At the end of turn 6, the IJN controlled JI, CP, and HI. The USN controlled BB, IO, CS, US, MS, SP, IN, NP, and AI. The Marianas were not controlled.

The IJN controls YNY, Truk, Saigon, Singapore, Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, Midway, Johnston Island, Maloelap, Kwajalein, and Saipan.

The USN controls Ceylon, Australia, Samoa, Andaman Islands, Port Moresby, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal, Lae, Philippines, Dutch Harbor, and Attu.

Units available for turn 7 (including reinforcements):
IJN - 4xCV, 3xCVL, 3xBB, 6xCA, 5xLBA, 1xSNLF USN - 8xCV, 9xCVL, 12xBB, 20xCA, 10xLBA, 3xMarines, F-boat

I believe the Allies are almost guaranteed to win in this situation.

Bid: 4.5
Adjustments: 1,2

Turn 6 - IJN +19 PoC (will be +15 at end of turn 6)
