The Normal Turn One Variant is in play!
The NT1 variant is modified by replacing the Basing Uncertain rule as follows: "18.3 Rushed Reinforcements: During Allied basing, the Allied player may pay POC to allow any ship listed as 'Basing Uncertain' to base at any red Allied port. The first ship selected costs 2 POC; subsequent ships cost 1 POC each. POC is paid by increasing the IJN score. Basing Uncertain ships which are not selected arrive at Pearl Harbor with Turn Two reinforcements."

Tim: Score at the end of T1 is +3 IJN in the Tow/Klimushyn QR match.
Japanese sink 3 BB's, the 7AF and 5AF, 3 battleships are bottomed at Pearl.
The Houston is sunk in Indonesia while 2 US CV's travel to the US Mandate, successfully dodging the I-boat.
Tim: Chuck has offered to resign as he feels he's over his head.
Lee: America (Lee Kendter) resigns at the
end of turn 5. Japan is at POC 29, and I failed to break a hole in the
line. With perfect luck and play I only count America as getting 27 POC at
the end of turn 8, and that isn't enough with a Ed playing Japan with a .5 bid.
Frustrating games, as I am not sure where I lost. I can identify a couple of bad
breaks - turn 2, losing the 50/50 critical dice roll for day night turn 3, and
putrid LBA at pearl.
Turn 3 really hurt, and one or two less Japan CV would have let me assault SPO,
and a victory there would have let the game continue.
That still doesn't seem enough, so congrats to Ed on something subtle that I am
not seeing that helped him to win.
Ed: As this was an NT1 match, here's
some info regarding turn 1...
I deployed 2 LBA to the Marshalls and large surface forces in both CPO and
Hawaii. The USN did not engage and went to the Mandate for better basing.
On PH raid round 1, I sent 8 shots against the 7AF (1 hit - 2 damage). On PH
raid round 2, I sent 5 shots against the 7AF (all misses). The 7AF returned fire
and sunk Zuiho. Round 3 was night. Round 4 was day - 7AF finally is sunk. The
7AF, which had stayed in port, missed with its return fire.
With only 3 LBA in Indonesia, I could only sink the 5AF and put 4 damage on
Prince of Wales.
Considering how unprepared the 7AF was, shouldn't the IJN aircraft get the
attack bonus against them on round 1?
GM Comment: Historically, the IJN used two of its six carriers against the 7 AF in the first round and another one in the second round. That's a higher proportion of forces than Ed used in this game. There's no question the 7 AF was vulnerable -- but it was also very dangerous to the IJN. The NT1 intends a rational level of fear for the IJN at Pearl Harbor (as a way of either inflicting more damage to the IJN or reducing the damage inflicted by the IJN).
Rob: Stephen Gorard and I played 2 quick rounds:
In the first, he played IJN with a bid of 3.5 POC and conceded after turn 4.
In the second, he played IJN with a bid of 2.5 POC and I conceded after Turn 5.
Bob: IJN has POC at 16 going into battle round of T4. Pearl did not fall as IJN carriers have YET to even HIT an LBA.
Kevin: As promised, Bob Hamel and I have finished the quick round and my USN won it by 1/2 POC. Bob's bid to play IJN was 1.5 in a standard NT1 game. Both sides deserved to win this one!
Eric: Quick Round 5 is progressing nicely I'm IJN but can't remember the bid. Turn 3 has just ended with IJN at 20 poc. He managed to save Pearl from conversion, but has only 3 US CV's (including turn 4 Wasp), the other the lex(-2) and sara(-3) and 5 lba 2 damaged. IJN has lost kaga, hosho, and Junyo. Very few surface ships have been lost on either side. Scott will be hard pressed to do anything the next 2 turns without any offensive air power to speak of, so I expect max poc through turn 6.
Scott: I thought about it after I went to bed. While victory is possible for me, it would be pretty tough.
Eric: Quick round is done I outlasted Scott but just barely.
